Friends of Portobello is not alone in standing up for the future of its local community. Here are some other local campaigns seeking to preserve their local way of life.

Friends of Greenwich Market
The future of London's Greenwich Market is in doubt after the property owners, Charity Greenwich Hospital, decided to draw up a range of proposals on how to change the market. Up to 20 shops and the popular Greenwich Market are at risk. An online petition can be signed to preserve Greenwich, a world heritage site, and its market.

Friends of Queens Market

Saville Row Bespoke Tailors Association
This classic English tailor's street is under threat from 'off-the-peg' clothes stores, such as Gucci and Paul Smith, changing the street's tradition and heritage. In March 2006 more than 150 tailors, cutters, finishers and waistcoast makers took to their street in protest.

Citta Slow
Founded in Italy in 1999, Citta Slow, Italian for 'Slow Town' is an international movement that aims to improve a town's quality of life, be it through protecting your town's environment, promoting local goods and produce, and avoiding the 'sameness' of contemporary towns across the world. Slow Food & Ludlow
In a similar way to Citta Slow, Slow Food aims to promote a town or community's local produce. Also founded in Italy, it's a knowing nod away from fast food values. Ludlow was Britain's first member of Citta Slow and is also a supporter of Slow Food.
