Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is Friends of Portobello?
Friends of Portobello is a campaign to preserve Portobello Road, Notting Hill, as Britain's first 'business conservation area'. We aim to persuade the local RBKC council to protect Portobello Road property from being bought by large retail outlets, to prevent the street from becoming another bland British identikit high-street. Portobello Road, London, is loved for its unique diversity and wonderful street-market life - this is the heart and essence of Portobello Road and is what we want to preserve.

2. What is the RBKC?
The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea - this is the local council that Portobello Road lies in. The RBKC council controls local government policy in the area.

3. What is a Business Conservation Area?
A town zone in which property purchase is controlled by the type of retail outlet currently in place. For example, if an independent record shop currently exists at one address, this property could only be bought by someone who wishes to open a similar style shop.
Read more about Business Conservation Areas here.

4. Are there any other Business Conservation Areas in Britain?
No. Our aim is for Portobello Road to be Britain's first Business Conservation Area.

5. Whereabouts in London is Portobello Road?
Portobello Road is in the Notting Hill district of London. Notting Hill is central-west London, in the postcodes W2, W10 and W11. The closest London Underground stations to Portobello Road are Notting Hill Gate, Ladbroke Grove and Westbourne Park.

6. When is Portobello Market open?
Portobello Market is open 6 days a week from Monday-Saturday. It is not open on Bank Holidays. The market is busiest on a Saturday. To preserve the market's future, we encourage everyone where possible to make best use of it during the weekdays Monday-Friday too.
